Pacific War, 1941-1945. The cadre of the Imperial Japanese Army 230th Infantry Regiment photographed in Sumatra, Dutch East Indies, 1942. Seated in the center of the front row is the regiment's commander—Colonel Shoji. Raised in Shizuoka in the late 1930's, the 230th Infantry Regiment saw its first action in China. With the outbreak of the Pacific War in December of 1941 the regiment participated in the Battle of Hong Kong, followed by the invasion the Dutch East Indies, and later the Guadalcanal Campaign where they would sustain heavy casualties before withdrawing from the island.
