Laccase, molecular model. Laccases are oxidase enzymes that have copper atoms at their active site. They are found in plants, fungi and microorganisms and have a range of functions. In fungi they are involved in the pigmentation of fungal spores and the breaking down of lignin in plant walls during digestion. In plants laccases are involved in the polymerisation of lignin during the formation of cell walls.
