Osgood-Schlatter disease. Side view of the knee of a 17-year-old patient with Osgood-Schlatter disease. This disease is characterized by a painful enlargement of the bony prominence of the shin (lower centre) just below the knee (at top). Enlargement of this prominence, called the tibial tuberosity, is due to repetitive pulling of the thigh muscle, the quadriceps. It occurs most commonly in teenagers (usually boys). Pain above and below the knee is worse during strenuous activity. Osgood-Schlatter disease usually resolves when ossification (bone formation) is complete. However, if pain is particularly severe the knee may be immobilised in a plaster cast.
