Calypso weaves in her cave, whilst Odysseus sits looking longingly towards home. Hermes the messenger of the gods approaches. By Donn Philip Crane (1878-1944). Calypso was a nymph who lived on the island of Ogygia. According to Homer's Odyssey, having enchanted Odysseus with her singing as she weaves at her loom, she detains him for seven years, promising Odysseus immortality if he stays with her. However, he can no longer bear being separated from his wife, Penelope, and is seen sitting on a headland crying. Eventually, Zeus orders the messenger Hermes to tell Calypso to set Odysseus free.
