Some time after this ill-starred enterprise, two settlements wereattempted by Chauvin of Rouen and Pontgrave of St. Malo. Somehouses were built, and trade established with the Indians; but nopermanent station was built. These repeated failures could not damp the spirit of the Frenchpeople; and now a more propitious era was dawning upon Commander de Chaste, governor of Dieppe, planned an enter-prise, in which he was joined by several merchants, among whomwas Samuel Champiain, the father of the French settlements inAmerica. He and Pontgrave ascended the St. Lawrence as far asthe Sault St. Louis ; but, finding it impossible to pass that cataract,ihey with some difficulty reached the height above it, makinor the.
