Some time after this ill-starred enterprise, two settlements wereattempted by Chauvin of Rouen and Pontgrave of St. Malo. Somehouses were built, and trade established with the Indians; but nopermanent station was built. These repeated failures could not damp the spirit of the Frenchpeople; and now a more propitious era was dawning upon Commander de Chaste, governor of Dieppe, planned an enter-prise, in which he was joined by several merchants, among whomwas Samuel Champiain, the father of the French settlements inAmerica.
