Dismantling a nuclear power station. A decommissioned nuclear power station being dismantled. Full decommissioning of a nuclear power plant is an extremely expensive process and involves three phases. First the reactor is shut down and radiation is allowed to subside naturally for a period. Then all radioactive components are given a permanent covering of reinforced concrete with lead, steel, sand or clay lining. Only then can all the contaminated parts of the reactor be removed and all components thoroughly cleaned with water, steam and/or chemicals.
