Silver nitrate test for chlorides. Silver nitrate (AgNO3) is used as a test for halides (halogen ions), forming the precipitates silver chloride (AgCl), silver bromide (AgBr) and silver iodide (AgI). During the reactions the nitrate group becomes substituted with the halide forming a precipitate. Here, silver chloride (white) has formed in a reaction between silver nitrate and potassium chloride (KCl). Further testing is needed to distinguish between the halides using dilute and then concentrated ammonia solution, which will progressively dissolve the chloride and then bromide precipitates. For the result of silver nitrate tests on all three halides, see images C040/2672, C040/2673 and C040/2674.
