Colonel Henry Gerrish ofBoscawen, marched to Medford, Mass., as captain ofminute men after the Battle of Lexington, was lieutenant-colonel in Stickneys regiment in the Bennington cam-paign, and was present at the surrender of him the family genealogy is traced back eightgenerations to Captain William Gerrish, who came fromBristol, England, to Newbury, Mass., in 1639. Enoch Little, Sr., of Webster,lived until 1877. She had the pluck and energy toraise and educate five children from the farm, the subjectof this sketch being five years old at his fathersdeath, and the youngest of the family. He haslived on the homestead all his life, except when absentat school and during one years service in the armyduring the late war, when he served as a member ofCompany E, Sixteenth Regiment, New HampshireVolunteers, having been promoted and mustered out withthe regiment in August, 1863. His education, asidefrom that gained in the district and private schools of thetown, was gained in the academies at Hopkinton, ReedsFerry, and Boscawen. Mr. Gerrish has spent much time and considerablemoney in experimenting in the breeding of sheep, ofChannel Island cattle, in the application of fertilizers,and in forestry.
