Head in length: depth : doi-sal in, 12; anal 7: body smooth with dermal flaps on belly: caudal rounded. Body mottled with dusky and white, with numerous small white dots: fins barred with dusky; belly with dark cross-bars. Four specimens from Manila, length to inches. This species agrees fairly with the Japanese form called Pterophryne ranina by Jordan, except that the belly has distinct cross-bare. Probably Pterophryne ranina is merely a color variation of the Chinese-Japanese species Pterophryne histrio. ANTENNARIUS (Commersoni Lacepede. 239. Antennarius liispidus (Bloch). Head in length; depth 3; dorsal in, 12: anal 7. Color in spirits gray, marked with black lines run- ning obliquel}' on bodj' and radiating from eye: fins barred more or less with rows of black dots.
