Hen flea (Ceratophyllus gallinae), coloured scanning electron micrograph. This parasitic insect inhabits the nests of birds, usually those that nest in holes. It sucks blood from its host before dropping off when full, and spends much of its life in the detritus of the nest. Magnification: x45 at 6x7cm size.
