Royal Institution Christmas Lecture, 1944. The Christmas Lectures for children have been held annually since 1825 at the Royal Institution, London, UK. The 1944 lectures were presented by British astronomer Harold Spencer Jones (1890-1960). The title of the lectures was 'Astronomy in our Daily Life'. Here, the equipment for a lecture is being constructed by assistants and technicians in the Institution's lecture theatre. Spencer Jones is at far left, looking towards the camera. The equipment includes a quartz clock (upper right), at the time the most advanced method of keeping time, with atomic clocks not used until the 1950s and 1960s.
