Asteroids. Artwork of the surface of an asteroid (minor planet) showing numerous other asteroids in its sky. Asteroids are lumps of rock or small planets that have elliptical orbits around the Sun. Most of these lie between the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter, an area known as the asteroid belt. The asteroids here have an irregular shape. Most asteroids are irregularly shaped, and typically are around 150 kilometres across. However, the largest asteroid, Ceres, is over 900 kilometres in diameter.
