The artist has madecolumns graceful at the expense of strength, and has piled structuralmasses where they would be theatrically effective. He was avowedlynot imitating nature but producing decoration. This is shown notonly by the faucifulness of the architecture, but also by the repetitionof scenes. Repetition is what separates decoration from the art thatimitates or interprets nature. Nature seldom repeats and neverexactly. Of ornament and pattern, repetition is the backbone.
