Hatch chickens from eggs of hens that have been tested for layingqualities and that lay eggs of a good size. Hatch the chickens under hens(not in incubators). Raise them in colony coops scattered around the fieldsto insure a good constitution, without which you cannot have a good layingstrain. 4. I consider the American class the best for farmers as they have morevitality. They include all varieties of Rocks, seven varieties of Wyan-dottes, -Tavas, Black and Mottled, and Rhode Island Reds. 5. I am not in favour of offering prizes for Toulouse Gander. T. H. Scott, St. Thomas. 1. There is a wonderful improvement in the quality of poultry exhi-bited at the Fairs and Winter Poultry Shows. 2. I find at a number of shows, birds are shown in small low coops orboxes, which do not allow them to stand erect. Xo one can judge themproperly in such pens. Coops should be at least 22 inches square by 26high. Farmers birds often are very dirty, especially white ones, and shou]<lbe washed. Turkeys and geese require much larger coops according to theirsize. Scaly legs are another bad feature, easily cured by a few applica-tions of lard, sulphur and a few drops of carbolic acid. 7a A. s. 1909 THE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETIES. 99 (a) The utility fowls are deserving of more prize money than theornamental. A bronze gobbler weighing 30 lbs. gets no more than a smallbantam or pigeon. The express is much liigher on the gobbler going to theshow. 3. I prefer Wyandottes as an all round general purpos
