Night beach view, with reflections, north to fireworks, Central Pier Big Wheel, red Blackpool Tower, Blackpool Illuminations

The Central Pier dates to 1864, the year after the more genteel North Pier. In 1990 the pier was strengthened, at a cost of £75,000, to take the weight of the 32m (108ft) tall 'Big Wheel', here illuminated. The Sky Flyer is a recent flying machine ride, where tourists sit in seats which rise and spin, on the promenade near the pier's entrance. Blackpool Tower, opened in 1894, has computer-controlled changing lights, here illuminated green. The tower in 2013, 2014 and 2015 was undergoing repairs. On Fridays in September, from approximately pm to pm, the town hosts a World Fireworks Championship. Teams from Ireland, China and France featured in 2013. The fireworks displays are located on the North Pier and are here seen behind the Central Pier from the Central Sands Beach, looking north.
