His father kept a grammar-school of the humbler order; andin this seminary did young Henry acquire the rudiments of Latin, which, witha slight tincture of mathematics, formed the extent of his regular his boyhood he is said to have shown an aversion to study, preferring greatlyto indulge in the sports of the forest, the hill, and the lake, and almost alwaysfollowing such pursuits alone.
