This inscription was very poorly published (^Revue des EtudesAnciennes, 1901, p. 357, no. 17) by Yerakis, who had not seenthe altar at all. He reads ?? ??? ??????? | rovSe ????? | lepo-?????? I ????<; ????? | ???????. I give the correct text frommy copy and squeeze. It is not surprising to find a cult ofHeracles at Sinope, for Autolycus, its mythical founder, wasa member of the expedition of Heracles against the Amazons(Plut. Lue. 23 ; Appian, Mifhr. 83; ApoU.
