Pattaya, Thailand - 30 March 2011 Abstract close-up of a palm leaf in Pattaya, Thailand. The Traveller's Palm is actually a native of Madagascar. Ravenale, to give it its proper name, has named thus because the sheaths of the stems hold rainwater, which supposedly could be used as an emergency drinking supply for thirsty travellers. However, the water inside the plant is murky, black and smelly and therefore definitely not potable. Another plausible reason for its name is that the fan tends to grow on an eastCwest line, providing a crude compass.
