Shuttle crew. Portrait of the crew of the space shuttle Columbia during mission STS-93 (23rd-27th July 1999). At lower left is Eileen M. Collins, the first female mission commander on a space shuttle mission. At lower right is Michel Tognini. On the back row, from left to right, are Steven A. Hawley, Jeffrey S. Ashby (pilot) and Catherine G. Coleman. Hawley and Coleman are both mission specialists, while Tognini is a specialist representing France's Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). The main purpose of mission STS- 93 was to deploy the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the most powerful X-ray telescope ever built.
