Attack on Lambeth Palace by a mob of Londoners, 11 May 1640 following the dismissal of the short parliament by King Charles I
Illustration from Cassell's illustrated history of England published circa 1896. King Charles I had dissolved Parliament on 5 May 1640, after only three weeks' sitting. Archbishop Laud who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1633, during the personal rule of Charles I shared the blame for this and on the night of 11 May 1640 Lambeth palace the official London residence of Laud as Archbishop of Canterbury was attacked. He was later accused of treason by The Long Parliament of 1640 and eventually executed.
