The Strelitzia, or bird of paradise flower, was named in 1773 after the British Queen Charlotte who was a Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz before marrying George III of England. Sir Joseph Banks brought the plant from South Africa in 1773 and and called it "Strelitzia reginae" in honour of Sophie Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
