Grape root. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a grape vine (Vitis sp.) root. At centre are xylem (red) and tracheid (green) cells, which transport water around the plant. These are surrounded by cambium cells (light green) and then phloem cells (dark green), which transport carbohydrates around the plant. The next layer consists of parenchyma cells and starch grains (blue), a store of energy. The outer layer is cork cambium (red and black). Magnification: x45 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
