Alexander Dalrymple (1737-1808), British hydro- grapher. Hydrography is the science of charting oceans, seas and rivers. Dalrymple believed in the theory that there was a large temperate continent, other than Antarctica, that encircled the south Pacific. This was disproved by Captains Cook's voyages.
