London Underground construction. Workers on a tunnelling shield in 1898 during construction of part of the Central London Railway, now London Underground's Central line. Construction of the tunnels for this line began in 1896, with kilometres of tunnelling completed by the end of 1898. The original section of the line ran from Shepherd's Bush to Bank, served by 13 stations. The tunnels were metres across, with the diameter increasing to 6 to 9 metres at stations. The engineers responsible for construction were James Henry Greathead (designer of the tunnelling shield), Basil Mott, John Fowler, and Benjamin Baker.
