To prevent spilling of the liquidwhen not in use a wooden board, faced with india-rubber, slides on tothe cells when the elements are withdrawn, and so effectually closesthem. Twenty brass sockets, numbered, and each one in connectionwith the cell below, are arranged on the surface of the element board, Fig- 34-. together with two screws for the reception of the conducting wires, and a commutator for reversing or arresting the current. The com- THE DENTAL RECORD. 253 mutator is a vulcanite button, so marked as to clearly show when thecurrent is on, and which is, at the time, the positive or negative pole, the poles being reversed by half a revolution. The rheophores, con-ducting wires, etc., are contained in a small case in the lid. FovEAUxs Battery.—This is a constant current battery of 50elements, designed by Mr. Foveaux, of the firm of Weiss & Sons. Itis arranged on Smees principle (platinised silver and zinc), for whichthe preference is given on account of the fragility of the carbonelement which is used in other forms of battery, and also the fact ofthe latter requiring such a strong solution. This battery is veryefficient and reliable, capable of standing a great deal of hard work, and is not liable to get out of order. For diagnostic purposes it leaveslittle or nothing to be desired
