The head of a Velociraptor dinosaur, from a life size model, showing its sharp pointed teeth and a beady yellow eye. Jurassic Coast, Dorset, England.

Real velociraptors were about the size of a turkey, which would have made them slightly less exciting and menacing than the vicious predators which appear in the Hollywood blockbuster “Jurassic Park”. The creatures that star in the movie are actually based on a similar, larger dinosaur called Deinonychus. Steven Spielberg and Michael Crichton made great efforts in the pursuit of accuracy and authenticity during the making of the film, but for dramatic reasons they decided to call their monsters “velociraptors” because the name sounded more ferocious and terrifying.
