Castelnau de-cided to attack on the 19th, and so began the battle ofMorhange, the chief part being assigned to Fochs twodivisions. The attack soon came to a dead stop under enemyfire, whole batteries being put out of action by howitzershells. Foch prepared for a withdrawal when artillery firenorthwest of Delme indicated that the battle was extendingin a new direction, German reserves having been sent acrossthe Rhine to reinforce Heeringen.
