Dinosaur and early mammal. Artwork of a feathered bird-like dinosaur (Dromeosaur, head at left) confronting an early mammal (lower right). Mammals evolved from mammal-like reptiles (therapsids) around 225 million years ago during the Triassic period. The first mammals were mostly small, feeding on insects and small reptiles. Some of the therapsids were larger in size. Mammals and dinosaurs co-existed during the remainder of the Mesozoic Era (Age of Reptiles). After the mass extinction that led to the end of the dinosaurs around 65 million years ago, mammals and birds survived to diversify and dominate in the Cenezoic Era (Age of Mammals).
