The Crowning with Thorns: vivid French stained glass depicting a scene from the Passion of Christ in a window of 1511, created by the master glassmakers of Troyes, in the Église Saint-Rémi at Ceffonds, a village in the Haute-Marne department of the Champagne region in northeast France.

Jesus sits meekly, his head inclined to one side, as his captors perform a mock coronation ceremony. They place a plaited crown of thorns on his head and a reed in his right hand, while bowing at the knee and taunting him by hailing him as the king of the Jews. The window, made in 1511, is one of several installed in the village church, the Église Saint-Rémi de Ceffonds, as it was being rebuilt between 1510 and 1524. Champenoise School stained and painted glass made in the Champagne region - particularly in the workshops at Troyes - was renowned at that time for its intense blues, striking reds, vivid emerald greens and vibrant chrome yellows. Troyenne glass survives in many churches in the river valleys and departments of the Aube, Marne, Upper Marne and Yonne. Apart from vivid colours, it can be identified by the inclusion of small narrative scenes and halos with beaded decoration.
