This axial (cross sectional) CT image through the lower chest shows the typical appearance of a moderate to large hiatal hernia (purple). The superiorally displaced stomach contains oral contrast given just prior to the exam. Hiatal hernia is associated with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
