It was in 1881 that Dr. Dixoncommenced practicing in St. Louis,where he has since remained. Hehas devoted most of his attention to MEDICINE AND SURGERY. 237. surgery, and his successful work isa matter of history. Dr. Dixon is chief of surgical clin-ics and clinical lecturer on surgeryin the Medical Department of Wash-ington TTniversit}T and surgeon tothe Bethesda Hospital, a member ofthe Association of Military Sur-geons, a member of the prominentmedical societies, and has contrib-uted considerable to the medicalliterature of the day. JOHX DOOLEY. The subject of this sketch is bybirth an Englishman, born atBurton-on-Trent, Eeb. 12, early education was acquiredin private schools of his nativecountry. He studied medicine un-der able preceptors, and was a prac-ticing physician when he came tothe United States in 1863. After stopping for about sismonths in Illinois he proceeded toKansas, settling first in ShawneeCounty. He pioneered in Kansasuntil 1879, practicing in different parts of the section in which he hadsettled. In those clays the Westerncountry doctor thought nothing oftraveling twenty and thirty miles toattend a single pat
