Palaeotherium magnum, an odd-toed ungulate that lived in France during the Eocene Epoch, about 45 million years ago. Illustration from Louis Figuier's The World Before the Deluge, 1867 American edition, after the outline given by Cuvier. Once thought to be similar to a tapir, the Palaeotherium is now reconstructed to look more horse-like, without a long snout.
