Buffalo giving birth. African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) giving birth to a calf. A buffalo calf is born after a gestation period of 10-11 months, and nurses from its mother for at least 6 months. African buffalo are social animals, living in large herds numbering up to several thousand individuals. They eat mainly grass, living near forests and water, which they retreat into during the hottest parts of the day. African buffalo are found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, except in the southernmost regions. Photographed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa.
