So far as is known, the former had its origin with Hippocrates,the latter, if one accepts the Post-Columbian origin of syphilis,could have come into existence among Europeans and their descendantsafter the Sixteenth century only. The various interpretations given to the Hippocratic term through- TABES 555 out the ages is a chapter of surprises.
