Nitrogen fixation research. Technician (left) placing samples into a gas chromatograph while a chemist examines data from a mass spectrometer on a screen. This is being done to measure the amount of isotopically labelled nitrogen that has been delivered from a mycorrhizal fungus to its host plant. Mycorrhizal fungi live in the roots of plants. They are capable of fixing nitrogen from the air, and form a symbiotic relationship whereby they pass this nitrogen onto the plant.
