. Pott's disease : its pathology and mechanical treatment, with remarks on rotary lateral curvature. POTTS DISEASE, 6i Fig. 4 represents Taylors chin piece with occipital uprightsE jE, and the form of chin cup H, I have found the mostuseful, I have introduced a screw at K, by which the head-piece may be secured at any point as it swings laterally on thepivot at C. We thus, with the ball and socket pivot, and thescrew at K, possess the means of securing the head in any posi-tion desired, and of changing it at will ivithout removing theapparatus from the patient. In Potts disease or torticollis, where a head support is necessary, the apparatus here described,if surmounted on a proper pedestal, answers every indicationin a mechanical sense. In Figs 4 and 5, F represents the hinge upon which theanterior half of the chin-piece opens, and 6^ is a slide whichlocks the apparatus after it is Fig, 5> Fig. 5 gives a lateral viewof the chin-piece, with theoccipital uprights, the balland socket pivot in position, and the key applied throughwhich the various changesare made. In chronic spondylitis of the cervical region, the plasterbase, as I have before stated, is as unnecessary as it is uncom-fortable. Still, if it should be deemed best or expedientto use it as a pedestal upon which X% surmount a head rest,Dr. Putnams combination of the plaster jacket with Taylors 62 POTTS DISEASE. chin-piece * presents many advantages over the jury that it is cheaper, however, it has no advantages what-ever over other and more appropriate pedestals. By runningthe pad-plates of Taylors apparatus well up on the uprightsand using the shoulder pieces as a basis of support (for herethe disease is above the shoulders), I have accomplished manyexcellent results. The adjustment of the chin-piece is some-times difficult to the uninitiated, but when once the apparatusis properly fitted
