Pondicherry, India, 1761 and 1778. The last hope of an empire. Pondicherry was a French colony in southern India. The British captured it in 1761, but it was returned to France under the terms of the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Pondicherry changed hands between France and Britain several further times before it was restored to France again after the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
