Tightly-packed timbers infilled with ancient wattle and daub: southeast corner of the single-storey south aisle and porch of the half timbered église Sainte-Croix-en-son-Exaltation (Church of the Exaltation of Saint Cross) founded in 1510 at Bailly-le-Franc, in the Pays du Der countryside in the Aube, Grand Est, France. The church has hardly been modified since it was built.
Bailly-le-Franc, Aube, Grand Est, France: tightly-grouped vertical timbers at the southeast corner of the single-storey south aisle and porch of the half timbered église Sainte-Croix-en-son-Exaltation (Church of the Exaltation of Saint Cross). The building, its oak frame infilled with wattle and daub, was founded in the year 1510. It has survived for more than 500 years in this small village southwest of the Lac du Der reservoir without any major modifications and it is an excellent example of the timber framed churches and chapels found in this part of the historic Champagne region. The church is among the attractions on the "Route des églises à pans de bois", a signposted tour of 15 villages in the peaceful Pays du Der countryside covering the Aube, Marne and Haute-Marne departments. The villages all have half timbered churches, chapels, farmhouses and other domestic buildings, mostly built between the late-1400s and the early-1700s. The Église Sainte-Croix at Bailly-le-Franc has a central bell tower capped by a soaring spire. Its roof coverings are a mixture of red tiles, dark grey slates and lighter grey chestnut shingles.
