Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Tikhvin and bell-tower in Kolomna, Russia
This church located at Cathedral Square of the Kolomna Kremlin was built in 1776 by a local merchant named Ivan Meshchaninova in honor of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God from which it derived its name. It is also known as the Church of Tikhvin. In 1861, another merchant named Philip Nazarovich Tupitsyna donated additional money after which the church expanded to its current five domes and three altars. The main altar was dedicated to Our Lady of Tikhvin, the chapels to the righteous Simeon & Anna the Prophetess and another one to the Mother of God "Soothe My Sorrows". After its construction, the church was consecrated by Saint Filaret, Metropolitan of Moscow. At the end of 1920. the church was closed and its interior destroyed. In 1989-1990 it was returned to the community of the Assumption Cathedral and fully restored. All icons and painting were painted by local artisans. On the west side, adjacent to the Tikhvin church, there is a 17th century belfry. In the 1920s all its bells were destroyed. Through the efforts of the community new bells were cast and installed. The largest one weighs more than two tons and is named "Pimen" in honor of His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. The bell was cast in Voronezh in 1990.
