A native of Europe, but long ago naturalized in America, where it ranks as by far the most important of hay grasses. Though preferring a moist, temperate climate, it withstands droughts and extreme heat and cold. Its hay is very nourishing and can be preserved for a long time. It should be cut when flower- ing, as if left later the hay becomes hard and coarse. It is often sown along with Red Clover, and the nutritive value of the hay is greatly increased by this mixture.
