Soon after mid-day a divi-sion of the sixth corps was sent toward Dabneys Mills in order toreach the Boydton plank-road. The route thence was covered withheavy woods; swamps and ravines intersected it in all directions,and the only road was a narrow pathway filled with stumps andknee-deep with mud. During the night tlie enemy had been misled by the quiet whichprevailed in the Union army, and believing that they had abandon-ed the advance, sent out General Pegrams division to skirmishers soon encountered Crawfords advance, and after asharp contest were forced back to their original position.
