GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL contains many fast food outlets and restaurants, including the world-famous Oyster Bar with its Guastavino tile vaults, surrounding central seating and lounge areas and provides access to the lower level tracks. GRAND CENTRAL OYSTER BAR AND RESTAURANT, which opened the same year as the Terminal itself (in 1913), is the landmark restaurant with one of the largest and freshest seafood menus including 25 types of fish and up to 30 varieties of oysters, plus other seafood specialties, matched with an award winning wine list featuring 80 selections by the TILE is the "Tile Arch System" patented in the US in 1885 by Spanish architect and builder Rafael Guastavino (1842–1908). It is a technique for constructing robust, self- supporting arches and architectural vaults using interlocking terracotta tiles and layers of mortar in a thin skin, with the tiles following the curve of the roof as opposed to horizontal (corbelling), or perpendicular to the curve (Roman). This is known as timbrel vaulting because of supposed likeness to the skin of a timbrel or tambourine. His work is found in New York’s most beloved landmarks and in major buildings across the country.
