But most commonly it is applied directly, by means of a cask constructed for that purpose, resembling the vehicles used for watering the streets of cities. In the subjoined diagram the liquid from the cask falls into a trough placed horizontally, and pierced with holes, by which means it is very equally distri- buted. In other cases, where the liquid is too thick to be distri- buted through these holes, it is, in passing out, made to strike against a plank or board, by which means it is scat- tered evenly upon the ground.
