It is supposed to have been kist overl)oard from the steam-cutter when coming alongside, which sad event was not communicated to me till next morning, when tlie ship was searched without success. The rod had been stowed away in its cover, and must have sunk. To try the experiment as to the floatation of a rod—of course without the reel, which would sink it at once—1 lowered my other rod into the water witii a line f;ist to it: it at first floated, but as the cover got wet it sank level with the surface. This was a. lighter rod than the missino- one, which was made of greenheart, a very close-grained wood. A reward was at once offered; search-parties were organised, who searched every bit of coast for miles; signalmen were on the look-out, divers sent down, l)ut all to no purpose; and it became evident the rod was gone. A gloom was thrown over the whole ship's company when it was known that the captain's pet rod was lo«t. The skipper betook himself to his cabin, and was '-eported to Ijc like a bear with a 8ore head, refusing to be ^ '\' '! I**.
