United States Coast Guard Bering Sea Patrol - Cutter NORTHWIND, Coast Guard Loran Station. United States Coast Guard Bering Sea Patrol - Unloading food stocks, fuels, supplies and the all important mail for the Coast Guard Loran Station at Attu. "Terrain" of this character makes un-loading of supplies a back-breaking chore. With the NORTHWIND anchored a mile or more off shore, supplies must be unloaded from ship to barge in heaving seas - then from barge to an uncompromising volcanic rock beach. Needless to say, the advent of the NORTHWIND to this isolated outpost was causes for rejoicing.
