Hill,Des Moines. Iowa; Sec y, Curtis Nye Smith. 19 Congress St., Boston, Juniperus Sabina fastigiata {Subject of this weeks illustration) Everyone acquainted with Juniperus Sabina is so ac-customed to thinking of a creeping or spreading ever-green when its name is heard, that it is a surprise tolearn of a variety having an upright growth. Thereis such a variety and not only is it upright but it is of arather fastigiata form as well, as our photograph willprove. When the writer saw this specimen for the first timelie ciiuld not place it with any he was familiar .luniperus virginiana there are numerous varieties, most of them well represented in nurseries here, butour specimen from the first did not agree with thisspecies in any important details. A furthersearch being made, the specimen proved to bea Sabina, Looking through European lists,it appeared that there is an upright variety, fastigiata, with which this specimen agreed. In color of foliage this Juniper much re-sembles J. communis, being of a light green, not nearly as dark as the Red Cedar, J.
