Courting Couple & Anvil Point Lighthouse

Built on the chalk headland at Anvil Point near Swanage by Trinity House in 1881 and designed by James Douglass. A squat round tower 12m high so that its light is rarely shrouded in the local sea mist and can be seen as far as 20 miles. On conversion to electric power in 1960 the original large optic was given the Science Museum. At this time the fog signal was replaced by an electric horn and this too was ended in 1988. The Lighthouse was fully automated in 1991.
