In April, 1864, the official list contained but thir-teen. In addition, there were several hospitals for soldiers maintainedby citizens, and both the Pennsylvania and St. Josephs Hospitals caredfor large numbers at different periods of the war. The earlier Government hospitals in the city in operation prior toMarch 1st, 1862, were located at Broad and Cherry streets, Twenty-fourth and Cherry streets, Ninth and Christian streets, Twenty-secondand Wood streets and Fifth and Button wood streets.
