Col. Greg Ebner, head of the Department of Foreign Languages at the Military Academy at West Point, assists Spc. Garrett Lysford July 6 with his Arabic assignment at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. Ebner attended the institute in 1996-1997 as part of his training to become a Foreign Area Officer. Ebner went on to gain fluency in Arabic, earning a doctorate in the language from the University of Texas at Austin in 2012. He returned to Monterey, California, for a 90-day developmental assignment at the institute's continuing education directorate.
