Kansen-en Garden means "sweet spring garden”. The garden is typically Edo style

Kansen-en Garden was previously the residence of the Shimizu branch of the Tokugawa Shoguns and one of the most prominent families of the Edo Period. After the Meiji Restoration the domain was transferred to Marquis Souma. The name Kansen-en means "sweet spring garden”. This comes from the fact that the garden’s spring water was sweet and suitable for tea. The garden is typically Edo style, that is to say a strolling garden encircling a gourd shaped pond. This pond is called Yamabuki-no-ido in the middle of the garden, surrounded by flowering shrubs. Mizu-Inari Shrine is also located on the grounds of Kansen-en.
